Talking Photography
Amidst constructions in their neighbourhood, a betrothed couple talks about photography and the unpromising future of their relationship.
Director’s Statement: In Singapore, marriage is everything. It is a socio-economic symbol, important for employment, government housing (BTO), and family traditional values amongst others. Youths rush into marriages out of pressure. Having seen many of my friends decide on annulments in lieu of divorces as a means of 'saving face' or 'do-over' or in pursuit of something truthful, this film came out of a reflection on the mood of one such conclusive conversation. As a child of divorces, these experiences also spoke to my upbringing and uncertainty with such commitment personally.
Taking inspiration from the deceptive but vital nature of photographs, and the constant sounds and sights of construction in a city determined to change and 'evolve', the work marries a difficult moment in this couple's life with experiments in form that complicate their and an audience's experience with truth.
